| Description: The American War of Independence and almost continuous wars against FRance and Spain left the national finances of Great Britain in a parlous state. New taxes were proposed in 1783 to service a loan that had been floated. These taxes included the tax on proprietary medicines which came into force in September 1783. This exhibit covers the introduction of Medicine tax duty stamps (labels) printed by the Congreve process and the subsequent evolution of their design.
