89th Congress – Perth 2018 – The Association of Scottish Philatelic Societies

The 89th Congress was held by the Association of Scottish Philatelic Societies in Perth during the 20th and 21st April where Scottish Philatelic Society were the host society for the two days, and Richard Cuthbertson presided as President.

As hosts for the event Scottish Philatelic Society have produced a Cover, a Postcard, a Smiler Sheet and a Commemorative Labels to mark the event.

Cover:The design (approved by Royal Mail) features GB stamps from the six reigns with Scottish thistle and lion stamp motifs together with the Scottish Philatelic Society emblem.	Postcard:The front features assorted images of GB stamps issued during the six reigns covering the last 125 years, together with the Scottish Philatelic Society emblem. Although the current stamp images are still under copyright, approval has been given by Royal Mail for the design of this postcard. On the reverse is a brief summary of the Scottish Philatelic Society.
Smiler Sheet:1st Class Scotland Saltire stamp with first Scottish Philatelic Society emblem of 1902 . The Smiler Sheet will be available by pre-order only for pick up at Congress	CommemorativeLabels:A special sheet of nine labels commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Scottish Philatelic Society has been produced based on the 1913 Philatelic Congress of Great Britain (organised by the Scottish Philatelic Society) with an image of the Scott Monument, Edinburgh. Only 50 sheets have been printed.

Exhibition:

32 dealers of postage stamps, postal history and accessories attended the exhibition from all over the UK.

There were 137 frames of exhibits on display, both competitive and non-competitive:
40 Competitive frames for the ASPS Competitions.
62 Frames from the Host Society
12 Frames of exhibits from other societies
10 Frames for the Tom Rielly Display and
13 frames for the Open competition

In addition there were 3 frames of competitve entries for the Junior Competition ALBA Salver and 1 entry for the Junior One-page Competition. The winner for both competitions was Lachlan Philby.

Post & Go

The association produced a Cinderella Post & Go stamp.

The Postal Administrations of Jersey, Guernsey and Gibralter attended this year and the following Post & Go Strips were available.

The Congress overprint was available on the Jersey and Guernsey flags as well as the Gibraltar Year of the Dog Strips.

Civic Reception & Congress Dinner:

Following the Tom Rielly display a civic reception was provided by the Provost of Perth & Kinross Council which was then followed by the Congress Dinner. A thoroughly entertaining after dinner speech was given by our Guest of Honour, the ex President of the Royal Philatelic Society of London, Frank Walton RDP FRPSL and the evening was rounded off when the Scottish Congress competition winners were awarded their trophies, which was followed by the awards of Association honours for services to philately.

Award of Merit:

The recipient of an ASPS Award of Merit this year was Gordon Shepherd from Uddingston Stamp & Postcard Club.

Election of New President:

At the AGM held on Saturday 21st April delegates elected Robert Watt from Largs & District Stamp Club to be President of ASPS and Colin Caskie from Perth Philatlic Society as the new Vice President.
